Pink Strokes Golf Tournament 2010 |
As we have moved into a brand new decade, there are many
changes on the horizon for our site and the organization. Our 7th Annual
Pink Strokes Golf Tourney is slated for Saturday June 5th at Innisbrook
Golf Course (www.golfinnisbrook.ca).
We welcome everyone to come out and celebrate this milestone and invite
new golfers to help us increase breast cancer awareness in young women
and most importantly raise critical funds for breast cancer research and
other women's cancers. Our sub-network NOYS is moving in the direction
of CHANGE and PROGRESS in providing SUPPORT for women in our COMMUNITY
in a SAFE and WELCOMING environment. We welcome 2 young women, Alison
Manzon and Carrie Firanski, as new organizing members who are looking
to take NOYS in a new and exciting direction. Please visit our NOYS page
on FACEBOOK and attend our NOYS DINNER scheduled for Thursday March 25th,
2010. Location to follow.
As founder of Pink Strokes and NOYS (The Network of Young Survivors) I
must take a moment to thank all of those who have helped me in my quest
to reach women going through a breast cancer diagnosis. I have met so
many incredible people in many communities. Thank you for wanting to make
a difference today for the daughters (and sons) of tomorrow! I am facing
the next few months with great anticipation of change and progress in
something that I truly believe in. Whether you are a golfer, have attended
the Pink Strokes & NOYS workshop as a supporter or a Survivor trying
to navigate thru and looking for new information, I invite you to join
me as these changes occur.
As I watch my own 2 children grow- I am completely delighted to see this
"baby" embarking in a new direction and welcome the new women
coming on board with a mission to increase awareness and support in our
community.
Hope and Hugs,
Allison Roberts

Reflections of a Woman - My memoir of breast cancer: loss,
love &
laughter. By Lisa Tugnette
| On the to-do list of Lisa Tugnette’s life,
breast cancer did not make the cut. Yet in 2003, at the age of thirty-six,
she became the fourth woman in three generations of her family to
be diagnosed with the disease. On top of it all, Lisa was diagnosed
on the same day as her mother. As a result of her experience, she
wrote Reflections of a Woman. One-part memoir and one-part guidebook,
her tale offers an intimate first-hand account of her diagnosis, treatment,
and recovery, along with advice for other breast-cancer patients.
Tugnette doesn’t gloss over any aspect of her trial, with its physical, emotional, and psychological side effects. She openly discusses her struggle with depression following her diagnosis, her fears about the effect her altered body would have on her marriage, and her misgivings about breast reconstruction. She voices her unexpected sensitivity to seeing models in fashion magazines, watching love scenes in movies, even walking past a lingerie store. Faced with the stark reminder of her mortality, Tugnette reflects upon the unconditional love of her husband and children, the friendships formed in her breast-cancer support group, and her renewed respect for life. By sharing the intimate details of this painful experience, Lisa Tugnette offers inspiration to other women, particularly those under the age of forty-five, struggling with a disease that wreaks havoc on body and soul. She acknowledges that, although breasts don’t define a woman, they do play an integral role in femininity and sexuality. Reflections of a Woman is a celebration of that femininity, of its complexity, its value, and its fortitude. (A portion of the proceeds from Reflections of a Woman will be
donated to Willow Breast Cancer Support Canada and Breast Cancer
Action Kingston.) |
